Putting GST on a bill

How to turn GST on, why the tax comes out of your price instead of being added on top, and how to give one item its own rate.

Last updated

GST is off until you switch it on, and that is the right default: most counter sales in a neighbourhood shop are casual bills, and a tax line on every one of them would be noise on the receipt and a lie on the record.

Turning it on

  1. Settings → Shop, and enter your GSTIN.
  2. Set your usual rate under “Default GST %”. Most shops have one rate that covers nearly everything they sell.
  3. A “GST bill” switch now appears on the payment sheet. Turn it on for the bills that need it and leave it off for the rest.

The tax comes out of the price, not on top of it

Sell something at ₹100 at 5% and the customer still pays ₹100. The bill shows ₹4.76 of GST inside that amount. Indian shop prices are MRP-inclusive, so adding tax on top of a shelf price would quietly overcharge every customer who has read the packet.

One item, a different rate

Open the item and set its rate on its own price screen. That rate wins over the shop default for that item on every bill, so a mixed shelf does not force you to choose one rate for everything.
