Common POS thermal printer issues & quick fixes
Before replacing hardware, check these four physical causes of thermal print failure.
Blank Paper Ejecting
Thermal paper rolls only have ink crystals on one face. If the roll feeds but stays pure white, take the roll out and flip it over. Scratch the paper with a coin or nail: the black side must face the roller head.
₹ Symbol Shows as ?
Standard ESC/POS text command sets lack the Indian Rupee glyph (U+20B9). Printing via browser print dialog or Karobari's Web Till sends bills as bitmap graphics, guaranteeing ₹ and Hindi characters print cleanly on every machine.
Faint / Streaky Receipts
Faint prints are caused by low thermal density settings or dust on the ceramic element. Clean the head with a dry microfiber cloth or isopropyl alcohol swab. Also check paper quality: cheap thermal paper fades quickly in sunlight or heat.
Questions about POS thermal receipt printing
Why is my thermal printer printing completely blank white paper?
Thermal paper has a heat-sensitive coating on only ONE side. If the paper roll is inserted upside-down, the heated print head burns against plain backing paper, producing no text. Do the quick scratch test: scratch the paper firmly with your fingernail. The side that leaves a dark black streak must face the printer's thermal roller head.
Why does the Indian Rupee symbol (₹) or Hindi print as '?' or random gibberish?
Most budget 58mm and 80mm ESC/POS thermal printers use Western ROM code tables (such as PC437 or CP850) that lack the Unicode Indian Rupee symbol (₹ U+20B9) and Devanagari script. To solve this without flashing firmware, print receipts via graphic/bitmap mode, or use Karobari's Web Till which automatically renders clean graphics with ₹ and local language text.
What is the standard character width for 58mm vs 80mm thermal printers?
A standard 58mm (2-inch) thermal printer prints 32 characters per line in Font A (12×24 dots) or 42 characters in Font B. An 80mm (3-inch) printer prints 48 characters per line in Font A or 64 characters in Font B. This test tool lets you preview and verify exact line wrapping for both widths.
How do I fix vertical white streaks or faded print on thermal receipts?
Vertical blank lines mean individual thermal heating pins on the ceramic print head have dust or paper residue buildup, or are burnt out. Turn off power, dampen a cotton swab with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol, gently wipe the black horizontal strip on the print head, allow it to dry for 2 minutes, and re-run this Head & Alignment test.
How does Karobari handle thermal printing without lock-in?
On Android, Karobari hands bills to Android's native print spooler for Wi-Fi or USB-OTG printers, plus instant 1-tap WhatsApp PDF and text receipts. On PC, Karobari's Web Till supports direct browser thermal printing with zero extra subscription fees.
