Billing App for a Photocopy & Print ShopA print counter, where half of what you sell is not a thing

चार सौ फोटोकॉपी और एक रीम कागज़, एक ही बिल पर — एक काम है, एक सामान।

Four hundred photocopies and a ream of paper, on one bill — one is labour, one is stock.

AT THE COUNTER

A student wants four hundred copies and the shop is full

11:40 am

The copies are a service — a price times a count, with nothing coming off a shelf — and the file cover he buys with them is stock. Both go on the same bill, and only one of them changes what you have left.

A photocopy and print shop opens on today's sales. The takings are the business here: there is very little stock value behind them and no margin to compute on the half of the shop that is labour.

SAME APP, YOUR SHOP

Three things that are different here

Personalisation in this product is defaults, a bounded set of tools, and vocabulary — never a separate app per trade. What follows is the whole of what changes.

It is the only live trade that is goods and services at once

A salon is services and a kirana is goods; this counter is genuinely both, and the app is told so rather than being made to choose. Photocopy, lamination, binding and form-filling are priced lines with no quantity tracked behind them. Paper reams, folders and cartridges are stock that comes down when you sell it.

Priced lines with no imaginary shelf

Four hundred copies is a rate times a number. The app does not count down four hundred somethings, because there is no something — which is the difference between billing a service correctly and billing it as if it were a very small object.

Low stock starts at twenty

For the half of the shop that is stock. Paper is the thing you actually run out of, it runs out mid-job, and twenty is a warning that arrives while you can still do something about it.

WHAT ARRIVES SET UP

What a photocopy & print gets on the first screen

Not a demo. This is the actual configuration the app applies when you pick Photocopy & Print at sign-up — the same data the app itself reads.

The units, in this order

  • Piece
  • Pack
  • Other
  • Kg

The first one is the default, because it is what this trade sells most of. Every quantity in the app carries its unit — there is no bare number anywhere.

The tools this turns on

  • Priced services, no stock count
  • Stock, in units

And nothing else. A trade is only offered at sign-up once every tool it needs has actually shipped — 59 of 172 trades pass that test today.

The items it starts you with

Tap to add, then set your own price. They are a guess at your shelf and you will correct some of them — that is expected, and it is why they live on the server rather than inside an app release.

Twelve of 20. The rest of the pack is in the app — this table is here so you can check the list is really your shelf, and a dozen rows settles that faster than 20 does.

Low-stock warnings start at 20, which is a starting point for this trade rather than a rule. Change it per item.

The other counter with no stock behind it

Try it on your counter

Free, on Google Play, and set up by you in the time it takes to put ten items in — the ones you sell most. The rest of the shelf goes in as it sells.
