Billing App for Paan ShopA paan counter, and four hundred sales of twenty rupees

खुली सिगरेट पीस में, लाइसेंस की तारीख़ ऐप के पास — और दिन भर छोटे-छोटे बिल।

Singles by the piece, a licence the app knows the expiry of, and a day made of very small bills.

AT THE COUNTER

Two cigarettes and a bottle of water, and the man behind him is waiting

10:50 pm

Thirty-eight rupees. Nobody wants a receipt and nobody is going to wait for one — so the sale is two taps and the record happens whether or not anything gets printed. The point at this counter is not the parchi, it is that the day adds up at the end of it.

A paan shop opens on today's sales, and the figure is doing something specific here that it is not doing elsewhere: at four hundred sales of twenty rupees, nobody can hold the day's total in their head by eight o'clock, and that is the whole reason to record any of it.

SAME APP, YOUR SHOP

Three things that are different here

Personalisation in this product is defaults, a bounded set of tools, and vocabulary — never a separate app per trade. What follows is the whole of what changes.

Pieces first, and grams for the loose stuff

Piece, pack, gram. A cigarette is one, a beedi bundle is a pack, supari and saunf are weighed out of a jar. Singles out of a packet are counted as pieces — the app does not force a pack to be sold whole.

Your licence, and when it runs out

This trade turns on the licence field alongside a chemist and a fertilizer dealer. The number prints on the bill and its expiry is a date the app holds, because a lapsed licence is otherwise found by an inspector rather than by a calendar.

Low stock starts at ten

High, on purpose. The fast lines here move in tens a day, so a threshold of three would tell you about a problem on the morning it had already happened.

WHAT ARRIVES SET UP

What a paan & cigarette gets on the first screen

Not a demo. This is the actual configuration the app applies when you pick Paan & Cigarette at sign-up — the same data the app itself reads.

The units, in this order

  • Piece
  • Pack
  • G
  • Other

The first one is the default, because it is what this trade sells most of. Every quantity in the app carries its unit — there is no bare number anywhere.

The tools this turns on

  • Stock, in units
  • Licence number and its expiry

And nothing else. A trade is only offered at sign-up once every tool it needs has actually shipped — 59 of 172 trades pass that test today.

The items it starts you with

Tap to add, then set your own price. They are a guess at your shelf and you will correct some of them — that is expected, and it is why they live on the server rather than inside an app release.

The starter items Karobari offers a paan & cigarette, with the unit each is counted in.

Twelve of 21. The rest of the pack is in the app — this table is here so you can check the list is really your shelf, and a dozen rows settles that faster than 21 does.

Low-stock warnings start at 10, which is a starting point for this trade rather than a rule. Change it per item.

What leaves the phone, and what never does

Try it on your counter

Free, on Google Play, and set up by you in the time it takes to put ten items in — the ones you sell most. The rest of the shelf goes in as it sells.
